As the lone mentoring organization in the state of Nebraska that guarantees youth will be matched with a Black male mentor, we offer a host of contractual training opportunities that can be used as resources for others seeking to engage more diverse mentors and mentees in a safe and culturally sensitive manner. Each of our trainings are uniquely crafted to meet the specific needs of our partners.

Our trainings also promote mentoring best practices as the 100 Black Men of Omaha, Inc.’s mentoring efforts align with the 100 Black Men of America’s “Mentoring Across a Lifetime” framework, the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring (EEP), and the Midlands Mentoring Partnership (MMP). Please email info@100BlackMenOmaha.org for more information about our training offerings!

Group Mentoring

Despite the fact that youth mentoring is most often considered in the context of a one-to-one relationship between one mentor and one youth, group mentoring serves as a tremendous framework to consider when mentoring Black youth. This training will explore the infrastructure that must be established to implement a group mentoring model. Additionally, training participants will gain an understanding of the greater collective impact that youth can experience through a group mentoring model.

This training recognizes that Black youth are likely to vary in their individual needs and, thus, in the specific types of mentoring supports that might be most impactful and effective. The truth of the matter is that Black youth often face many unique challenges as they strive to succeed in the schools and communities in which they reside. Training participants will learn skills and strategies that explore steps necessary to mentor Black youth appropriately (e.g., teaching or advocacy experience), and cultural competency activities to mentor Black youth effectively.

Representation matters in mentoring relationships! In an effort to foster mentoring relationships that go far beyond mere guidance and support, but rather develop mutually beneficial dynamics for the mentee and mentor, this training gives participants an opportunity to explore new mentor and volunteer recruitment strategies geared towards building relationships with more diverse communities.

‘Black vs. Black’ Youth Exploring their Culture and Context

The ‘Black vs. black’ training is constructed to help mentors promote their mentee’s racial identity in a manner that will promote more positive outcomes in other aspects of their mentee’s lives. This training will equip participants with tools to empower youth by instilling in them a sense of cultural awareness and cultural appreciation.
